MANOR SCHOOL OF BALLET newsletter feb 2013

OFFICE NEWS

We should start this newsletter with an apology for it arriving so late in to the New Year. We do hope that everyone had a good time over the festive period and also now the February break. We welcome any new pupils that have joined the school since January and we are looking forward to a busy spring/summer session.

This term, we are delighted to have Miss Casey back from her maternity leave. For anyone who doesn’t know, Miss Casey had a baby girl in July and she is called Skye. Miss Casey would like to say a big thank you to everyone who sent her good wishes and baby gifts, and, she would like to extend a special thank you to the staff that looked after her classes in her absence. Miss Morton and Miss Cunningham looked after the Galashiels branch, Miss Buchanan and Miss Bold who covered her classes at Marchmont and Mrs Dickson who took charge of the Highland classes at Corstorphine.

There are no other staff changes to report at this time; however, we are pleased that we still have Miss Natalie Marks at Belgrave branch while Mrs Murray is on leave. Many of you will be aware that Mrs Murray has been recovering from an operation that she had last year and the recovery time has been extensive. She has been popping in from time to time to visit exam pupils and she is actively keeping in touch. We wish her well as she continues to make her full recovery.

This term has been particularly busy with the preparation for our senior school show which takes place in June this year. The varied and many tasks that need to be achieved have kept the office staff on the go but we are very much looking forward to another successful show. This year we have decided to do another new show and after much debate Robin Hood seemed to be the popular choice. Senior school pupils that have chosen to participate will receive their information packs shortly after Easter. Please take time to read the information carefully as the packs do contain all the times and dates you need as well as ticketing and theatre information.

We would like to remind everyone that during the show preparation time our published office hours are subject to change at short notice. If you are having difficulty in reaching the office staff, please remember you can email us through the school website or you can leave a message on the answering machine and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

We would also like to announce that we now have the facility to take card payments over the phone. We are only able to offer this facility during our published office hours, but it is a quick and easy way to pay class fees if you are not a regular visitor to the branches.

Finally please remember that the school does have an active Facebook page and Blog which you can access through the school website. We use both of these for all sorts of information. They are worth checking from time to time and especially in the event of extreme weather where a branch closure may occur at short notice.

BRANCH NEWS

Please can we remind all users of Corstorphine St Anne’s, Marchmont St Giles and Inverleith Church that parking in the church grounds or forecourts is not permitted at any time. These are not rules made by the Manor School of Ballet however as a matter of safety we fully support their decisions not to allow moving traffic on their property.

In the past year, parking at Marchmont and Inverleith has been at dangerous levels and we have had two very near misses with cars and children. Parking is only allowed at Marchmont with a permit issued by the church. At Inverleith the forecourt is for staff parking only that won’t be moving during operational hours. Parking is available on street at all our branches.

It is important that we consider the safety of the children entering and leaving classes and we thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Tuesday evening Highland Classes are now split in to Junior and Senior levels and Miss Casey is pleased to announce that the Junior Class is now open to pupils from Primary 1 level (age 5). Waiting lists will open after Easter for joining in August 2013.

SHOWS & PERFORMANCES

As we mentioned earlier, the senior school pupils are performing Robin Hood in June. The Galashiels branch will be performing at Galashiels Academy on Sunday 2nd June and the Edinburgh branches will be at the Churchill Theatre on Morningside Road from Monday 9th – Saturday 15th June.

We normally produce a colour A5 programme for the senior show and we would like to offer advertising space to anyone who may be interested. Any support is graciously received and anyone wishing to place an advert in the programme can email the office for further details. Please make enquiries before the end of April.

The next Junior School show will take place around Easter 2014 and we will be issuing information regarding their production before the Christmas break.

Finally, in December some of our scholars were performing in the Children’s Classic Concerts with the R.S.N.O . Once again they performed to sell out audiences in Scotland’s most prestigious concert venues. The same group of dancers are also performing at a musical evening in celebration of St Anne’s centenary. Well done to all of them.

EXAMINATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

There are a number of R.A.D presentations and examinations coming up in the next few weeks. Most of the Grade 4 and 5 classes are due in this session and we also have 8 Intermediate pupils sitting professional level examinations. They have all worked extremely hard and we wish them all good luck.

The junior school will be offered U.K.A ballet award tests for all Nursery – Primary 2 level classes which will take place in May followed by class parent’s days in the last few weeks of term. Entry forms will be issued after Easter. Please take note of the closing dates as these cannot be extended under any circumstances. We issue closing dates to meet our own deadlines with the examination boards.

Miss Casey has also given birth this summer to a baby girl called Skye and will be returning to work in January.

Mrs Smith, Mrs Murray, John Patterson, Miss Bold, Miss Buchanan, Mrs Dickson, Miss Crawford and Miss Common are all back with us and looking forward to welcoming you back to classes. In addition we are pleased to introduce you to some new members of staff and some familiar faces that will be covering the maternity leave and joining the team this term. In Galashiels we welcome back Miss Cunningham and Miss Morton, in Edinburgh we welcome Miss O’Brien and Miss Marks. Apart from staff changes we have some branch changes this year too with the merge of our corstorphine branches. We are no longer at the Old Parish but just along the road at St Anne’s on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. We also said goodbye to Goldenacre Church this year and have relocated to Wardie Church on Saturdays.

As usual we have a busy year ahead starting in November with a set of R.A.D presentations and exams. Letters will be handed out in class to those pupils due to sit exams.

NOVEMBER 2012 Presentation Grades 1, 2 and 3

SPRING 2013 Presentation and Exams Grades 4 and 5

The R.A.D have been reviewing their syllabus and have now introduced brand new work for grades 1,2 and 3 and the teachers have been busy at courses throughout the summer learning the new syllabus. These new grades are to develop the individual dancer and are going to take a longer time to teach and sit examinations but the work is lovely and we are sure the pupils are going to really enjoy themselves and get a lot out of the new syllabus.

UKA Jazz, tap and highland exams are due in November and February and again letters will be handed out in class to the relevant pupils. Can we please remind you to return the forms by the closing date if you wish to enter your child as it takes a lot of processing and organising and we have to submit our entries to the relevant exam boards in time. We regret late entries cannot be accepted under any circumstances.

We have been asked again this year to participate in the Children’s Classic Christmas Concerts on Saturday 8th December in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Sunday 9th December in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall. Some of our Scholars will be dancing with the orchestra and it is well worth booking tickets early as these are really popular shows.
We also have our senior school show booked for the end of the summer term in the Churchill theatre and Galashiels Academy we will be announcing the show and sending out letters in January.

NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2011

THE MANOR SCHOOL OF BALLET
NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2011
Welcome back, we hope you have all had a good summer break and are looking forward to the year ahead.
This coming year is very exciting for us as we celebrate our 40th birthday in 2012. Look out for celebrations in the New Year.
First of all we would like to say well done to all our senior pupils who participated in the schools production of Bed knobs and Broomsticks.

In May the Galashiels branch performed in Galashiels Academy followed by the Edinburgh branches in the Churchill Theatre in June. The show was well attended at all performances and it was a great experience for everyone that took part.

Also during the summer some of our pupils were appearing in Glee at the Edinburgh Playhouse and well done to all of you who were successful in auditioning.
More shows are on the horizon for you to look out for Manor pupils and staff. The first is showcase at the Churchill Theatre in September. This is a variety show that raises money for Macmillan Cancer and well worth getting a ticket for.
Also coming up this term some of our students will be performing with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in the popular Children’s Classic Concerts. These performances are held in the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow and Edinburgh’s Usher Hall in December. Early booking is advised. Most important of all is our own Junior School show which will take place at Easter. More details will be announced during this term so look out for application forms.

STAFF NEWS
We are delighted to announce the birth of Mrs Smith’s son “Elliott” on the 16th July 2011. Both of them are doing very well. Mrs Smith is now on maternity leave but she hopes to return to teaching some classes in January.

Our congratulations go to Miss Nicholl who was married during the summer to Mr Calum Robertson. Please remember to call her Mrs Robertson.

Finally we welcome Mr Fraser Paterson to the teaching staff. Fraser comes to us with a wealth of dance experience and we are delighted he has come to join us. We welcome Fraser to our Galashiels branch for Jazz and Tap and to Edinburgh for Boys Ballet, Jazz and Tap and Scholars classes. He is looking forward to meeting you all in due course.
EXAMINATIONS

Well done to all the junior school pupils that took part in the UKA award tests at the end of last term. Certificates and Medals will be handed out in classes over the next few weeks. Also congratulations to all pupils who sat their RAD presentations and Examinations in June. More Exams are due before Christmas and those involved will be notified shortly.

SCOLARSHIPS

Due to the high number of returning scholars this year there will be a very limited number of places granted this term. Auditions will be held on Saturday 10th September at Belgrave. These are for Grade 4 (and 10 years) standard and above who study all subjects. It is designed for pupils with a keen interest in dance as a career. Application forms are available from class teachers and the closing date for entry is Thursday 8th September 2011.

OFFICE NEWS
The office will be open Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9.30am – 12.30pm and Thursday from 12.30pm – 3.30pm. Please note the office is closed on a Wednesday. We do encourage you to contact us by email at enquiries@manorschoolofballet.co.uk where we can respond to you in some cases out with office hours.

CLASS FEES AND APPLICATION FORMS

We would like to remind all parents that class fees are due before the start of the blocks. Invoices are sent out at least two weeks prior to the start of each block to allow time to pay your fees. As per the school’s terms and conditions fees are paid in advance to secure your child’s place in class. There is a significant cost to the school in chasing unpaid fees and from August 2011 we will be introducing a late payment fee on accounts that have not been paid within a reasonable timescale. (see class charges on the website)
We must also remind parents that closing dates on application forms are not changeable. The date we give as a closing date is the last given time that we can provide to meet our own deadlines. Any late forms will be refused so please read all correspondence carefully.

Manor school of ballet - News letter Jan 2011

Happy New Year and welcome back. We hope you have all enjoyed the festive holidays and are looking forward to the term ahead.
We would like to congratulate Mrs Alison Brown on the safe arrival of her baby boy Timothy born on the 16th December, both mum and baby are doing well. Mrs Brown will be on maternity leave until later in the term. Miss Charlotte Nicholl will be returning from her maternity leave in February and we are looking forward to her return.

The end of last year was extremely busy with exams & Presentations. Congratulations to all pupils who sat their RAD presentations, well done to the RAD exam pupils who all passed with distinction. Any parents days that were cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions will be made up on the second week of term at normal class times.

At the end of last term some of our Scholars took part in the Children’s Classic Concerts in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and Edinburgh’s Usher Hall with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. They performed to sell out performances and it was a great experience for the girls to dance with a live orchestra. Other scholars performed for us in Aladdin at Goldenacre’s Christmas Panto, despite the snow they managed to make the performances for the end of the run.

On the topic of extreme weather we had to close the school for the first time ever on the week of 29th November - 4th December 2010. This decision was not taken lightly and with safety in mind. We have been fortunate enough to secure staff and hall lettings to replace this week at the end of the summer term from 20th – 25th June 2011. We would like to point out that although we have been lucky enough to replace this week this time we cannot guarantee that this would always be the case if the same situation arose again.
It also proved extremely difficult to contact everyone despite the radio announcements and the message left on the answer machine. This has prompted us to update our website where you can now look at a blog which will contain current up to date information. The new website should be online this week and we hope you will find it more user friendly. There are timetable changes, new photos, up to date information and our new class charges for 2011 which will come into effect for Block 3, this is to incorporate ever increasing costs, rents and the national VAT increase. We would encourage you to visit the new website to view these changes and keep up to date with news in the school and therefore to be more environmentally friendly this will be the last paper Newsletter that we will be issuing unless you request a hard copy from the branch secretary/class teacher.

The senior school show this year has now been announced as Bedknob and Broomsticks. We will shortly be issuing more information and application forms however, dates and average costs are currently available on the website.

Some classes are due for RAD and UKA exams and relevant classes will be notified with dates and times in the next few weeks. Junior school Nursery, Primary 1 and 2 UKA award tests will take place in the summer term. As always with show and exam entries please remember no late entries will be accepted under any circumstances and only if class fees are up to date.

Term dates can now be found on the new website under timetables. We would like to draw to your attention the Easter holiday dates this year which may not run in line with your own region or school holidays. This is due to Easter being so late and every region taking different holidays; we have had to incorporate the Easter weekend and the Royal Wedding.

The current office hours are also available on the school website but we would like to remind you that it is not always possible to man the office during busy times and particularly around the show. We would like to introduce Pamela Phillips who will be helping out in the office on Thursdays but will largely be dealing with our private nurseries.
